A Surprise Proposal at Fortunata Winery | Jeff & Victoria

One of the things I love most about photographing proposals is that for a brief period of time, I get to become part of a secret.

Not a small secret, either.

The kind of secret that makes your heart race every time you think about it.

The kind of secret where you have to smile and act completely normal while watching someone experience one of the biggest moments of their life without realizing it's about to happen.

That's exactly what happened with Jeff and Victoria.

A few weeks before the proposal, Jeff reached out to me with an idea. He already knew where he wanted to propose and who he wanted there to celebrate afterward. He and Victoria had plans to spend an evening at Fortunata Winery in Providence Village with several of their closest friends. On the surface, it was simply a night out together—good company, appetizers, drinks, and conversation. Nothing about the evening would seem unusual.

That was exactly what made the plan so perfect.

The only challenge was figuring out how I could be there without Victoria realizing I was there for them.

After talking through a few ideas, Jeff came up with the perfect solution. Instead of introducing me as their photographer, I would simply be the winery's photographer. I would show up, blend into the atmosphere, and pretend that I was there gathering content for Fortunata Winery. That way I could move around naturally, interact with the group, and have my camera ready when the moment finally arrived.

If everything went according to plan, Victoria wouldn't suspect a thing.

When I arrived at the winery, the group was already gathered together. Friends were laughing, talking, and enjoying their evening exactly as planned. Looking around the room, there was absolutely no indication that one of the biggest moments of Victoria's life was only minutes away. Everyone seemed relaxed. Everyone seemed comfortable. Everyone was carrying on as normal.

Well... everyone except the handful of us carrying the secret.

Before approaching the group, I spent a few minutes walking around the winery. Part of that was intentional. I didn't want to walk through the door and immediately make a beeline for their table. But I was also doing what photographers naturally do whenever we arrive somewhere new—I was scouting.

As I looked around the room, I noticed a beautiful ivy-covered wall. The moment I saw it, I knew it would be perfect.

Not because it was where the proposal would happen.

But because it was where every photo would happen.

One of the biggest goals was making sure nothing felt suspicious. If I suddenly pulled Jeff and Victoria away to a special location that nobody else had used, there was always a chance Victoria would start putting the pieces together. Instead, I decided that every couple would take photos in front of the same ivy wall.

That way, when it was finally Jeff and Victoria's turn, it would feel no different than what everyone else had already done.

A smiling couple embraces outdoors, the man in a blue shirt and the woman in a floral dress, with colorful flowers behind them.
A couple poses outdoors in front of lush greenery, man in cowboy hat and blazer, woman in striped dress.
A smiling couple in matching black outfits poses together in a lush green garden setting.

After a few minutes, I walked over to the table and introduced myself.

"Hi everyone! My name is Chelsea and I'm the photographer for Fortunata Winery. I'm getting some content for the winery tonight. Would you mind if I took a few photos of y'all?"

Everyone agreed immediately.

Looking back, it's funny because nobody had to act. Nobody had to pretend. Everyone simply went along with the evening exactly as planned. One couple at a time, I brought them over to the ivy wall, captured a few portraits, and then sent them back to the group.

As I photographed each couple, I couldn't help but think about how close we were getting.

With every couple that stepped in front of my camera, we moved one step closer to the moment Jeff had been planning for weeks.

And somehow, Victoria never seemed suspicious.

She laughed with friends.

She watched the other couples take photos.

She enjoyed the evening.

She had absolutely no idea what was waiting for her.

Eventually, after photographing everyone else, there was only one couple left.

Jeff and Victoria.

I walked them over to the same ivy wall everyone else had used. Nothing about the moment felt unusual. In fact, it probably felt incredibly ordinary.

Looking back now, that's one of my favorite parts of the story.

Because the next photographs I took would become something incredibly special.

Couple smiling together in a lush garden, woman in white dress and man in light blue shirt and khaki pants.

At the time, she thought she was simply taking another photo like everyone else had done before her. She had no reason to think otherwise. We started with a simple pose. A smile toward the camera. A few photographs together. Nothing different than what I had done with every other couple that evening.

But those photos feel completely different now.

Because while Victoria was smiling at the camera, completely unaware of what was about to happen, Jeff was quietly waiting for his moment.

The moment we had planned.

The moment he had been carrying around in his heart for weeks.

The moment that would change everything.

After taking a few of the standard portraits, I moved into the pose Jeff and I had discussed beforehand.

I asked Victoria to turn her back toward him.

To her, it was simply another pose.

To Jeff, it was the signal.

As Victoria turned around, Jeff quietly lowered himself onto one knee behind her.

I remember watching through my camera and feeling that familiar rush of excitement that always comes with proposals. Even though I knew exactly what was about to happen, the moment never gets old.

Somewhere between the anticipation, the nerves, and the emotion, proposals always manage to feel magical.

I told Victoria we got the photo.

Then she turned around.

Man kneeling on one knee proposing to a woman in a light blue dress outdoors near a rustic barn.
Man proposes on one knee to woman in white dress outdoors near lush green ivy-covered building on sunny day.
Couple sharing a romantic kiss outdoors, surrounded by lush green trees and colorful flowers in a garden setting.
Tattooed man smiling while hugging a blonde woman outdoors with lush green foliage in the background.

The expression on her face changed instantly.

The confusion lasted only a fraction of a second before everything clicked into place.

And then came the emotions.

The kind of emotions you can't pose.

The kind of emotions you can't recreate.

The kind of emotions that happen exactly once.

Tears filled her eyes as she realized what was happening. The surprise, the excitement, the disbelief, and the overwhelming joy all seemed to arrive at once. As a photographer, those are the moments you hope for—not because someone is crying, but because you're witnessing something completely genuine.

For a few moments, it felt like the rest of the room disappeared.

There was no camera.

There were no other people.

There was just Jeff and Victoria standing in the middle of one of the biggest moments of their lives.

After the excitement settled, we spent some time capturing portraits of Jeff and Victoria as a newly engaged couple.

Those photographs always feel different.

The nerves are gone.

The anticipation is over.

The planning is finished.

What's left is simply happiness.

As we walked around taking photos, you could see it written all over their faces. The smiles came easier. The laughter felt lighter. Every glance between them seemed to carry a little more meaning.

They weren't just dating anymore.

They weren't just talking about a future together.

They had just taken the first step toward it.

Smiling blonde woman in white dress embraces man outdoors, wearing gold watch and ring, with tattoo visible on arm.
Black and white photo of a couple embracing, showing tattoos, a bracelet, and an engagement ring on the woman's hand.
Happy couple showing off engagement ring, man in white shirt embracing blonde woman in white dress outdoors.
A couple dances joyfully outside elegant stone-framed double doors, woman in white dress twirling.

As I packed up my camera at the end of the evening, I couldn't help but smile.

What had started as a casual night out with friends had become a story they would tell for the rest of their lives. The proposal itself lasted only a few minutes, but the memory will last forever.

And for me, it was a reminder of why I love photographing proposals so much.

Because for a brief moment, I get to be part of the secret.

And then I get to watch two people begin their next chapter together.

If you're planning on proposing in the Dallas / Fort Worth area, I would love to capture it! I offer free content creation videos straight from my phone and / or meta glasses. I also have a videographer that I collaborate with who would love to capture the moment if you're wanting more professional video coverage! Wanting to deck the proposal spot all out? I got a girl who does that too! Think red rose arches, red rose petal walkways lined with candles. :)
