When Things Go "Off-Script". A Memorable Fort Worth Japanese Garden Proposal
There is no place in DFW quite as serene as the Japanese Gardens at the Fort Worth Botanic Garden. I was tucked away near the pavilion this past July, long lens ready, watching this beautiful couple on a small bridge near the Koi pond. The moment was perfect—until the wedding band took an unexpected swim.
While the engagement ring was safely on her finger, the wedding band slipped and fell directly into the pond.
As a photographer, my job in that moment shifted. We discussed finding a garden worker or even coming back with a magnet to try a "rescue mission," but as the minutes ticked by and we couldn't find staff nearby, we had a choice: let the session end in stress, or keep going.
We chose to keep going. I had another session scheduled right after, so I couldn't stay to join the search, and to this day, I’m not sure if that band was ever retrieved or if it still rests at the bottom of the pond as a permanent part of the garden’s history. But what I do know is that the couple was an incredible sport. There was laughter, a few deep breaths, and we moved forward with a beautiful session. It’s a story they will tell for the rest of their lives.
