The Best Family Photo Locations in DFW (That Are Actually Kid-Friendly)
As both a family photographer and a toddler mom, I look at photo locations a little differently than most photographers.
Of course I want beautiful scenery.
I want gorgeous sunsets, greenery, flowers, and unique backdrops.
But I also know what it's like to show up somewhere with a child who has absolutely no interest in standing still.
Kids want to explore.
They want to run.
They want to look at bugs, throw rocks, splash in water, and investigate absolutely everything around them.
Honestly? That's exactly why I love photographing families.
Some of the sweetest moments happen when children are simply being themselves.
When I'm recommending locations for family sessions, I'm not just thinking about what photographs well. I'm also thinking about whether the location gives children room to move, explore, and have fun.
Because when kids are enjoying themselves, parents usually enjoy themselves too.
These are some of my favorite family-friendly photo locations throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
Fort Worth Botanic Garden
The Fort Worth Botanic Garden is one of my favorite family locations in DFW because there is so much for children to explore.
Between the walking paths, bridges, gardens, and koi ponds, there is always something interesting catching a child's attention.
The garden offers a huge variety of backgrounds, which means your gallery can look like we visited multiple locations even though we never left the property.
I also love that there are restrooms, water refill stations, and plenty of shaded areas throughout the gardens.
This location works beautifully for families with children of all ages.
Why Kids Love It:
Koi ponds
Walking trails
Bridges
Open spaces
Lots of things to explore
Kimbell Art Museum
At first glance, the Kimbell might seem like an unusual family location.
Most people think of it as a beautiful architectural location for portraits, seniors, or couples.
But it also works incredibly well for families.
The grounds offer lots of open space for kids to move around while still providing beautiful architecture, greenery, and clean backgrounds.
One of my favorite things about the Kimbell is that it photographs beautifully year-round.
It also offers a good amount of shade, which can be a lifesaver during Texas summers.
Why Kids Love It:
Open grassy areas
Plenty of room to move
Easy walking paths
Minimal distractions
Airfield Falls
If your children love being outdoors, Airfield Falls is hard to beat.
This location offers so much variety in a relatively small area.
The waterfall, willow tree, river access, trails, and wide-open field all create opportunities for children to explore while giving us beautiful backdrops throughout the session.
One of my favorite parts of Airfield Falls is the giant willow tree.
Kids naturally gravitate toward it, and it creates some of the sweetest candid moments.
The waterfall area is also a huge hit with older kids who love adventure.
Why Kids Love It:
Waterfall
Willow tree
Open field
Walking trails
Lots of space to run
Eagle Mountain Park
Eagle Mountain Park is one of my favorite locations for families who love nature.
The trails, lake views, tall grass, and natural scenery create beautiful backdrops while still allowing kids the freedom to explore.
Because the park feels so open, sessions here often feel more like a family adventure than a traditional photoshoot.
And honestly, those are usually some of my favorite sessions.
Why Kids Love It:
Nature trails
Lake views
Open fields
Room to explore
The Flower Mound
If you're lucky enough to schedule a session during wildflower season, The Flower Mound can be absolutely beautiful.
Located in Flower Mound, Texas, this location becomes filled with seasonal wildflowers and greenery during the spring months.
Children love walking the trails, exploring the flowers, and simply being outdoors.
Because bloom conditions vary from year to year, this location is best during peak wildflower season.
Why Kids Love It:
Wildflowers
Walking trails
Open space
Seasonal color
Murrell Park
If you're looking for a location that offers one of the best sunsets in DFW, Murrell Park is always near the top of my list.
Located on Lake Grapevine, this location combines beautiful water views, shoreline access, open space, and gorgeous evening light.
Children love exploring the lakeside areas, while parents love the stunning scenery.
Because there is so much open space, kids never feel boxed in or restricted.
It creates a relaxed environment where everyone can simply enjoy the experience.
Why Kids Love It:
Lake views
Shoreline access
Open areas
Nature exploration
Incredible sunsets
Locations I Typically Don't Recommend for Young Children
Not every beautiful location is automatically family-friendly.
As a mom, there are certain locations where I find myself paying more attention to safety concerns than creating photographs.
Mandalay Canal
Mandalay Canal is absolutely beautiful.
It's one of my favorite locations for couples and engagement sessions.
However, there are very few barriers between the walking paths and the water.
For toddlers and younger children who are naturally drawn toward water, this can make sessions more stressful for parents.
Because of that, I typically recommend Mandalay Canal more for couples, engagements, seniors, and proposals than family sessions with young children.
Downtown Locations
Many downtown locations throughout DFW offer incredible architecture and scenery.
However, traffic, roads, crowds, and busy sidewalks can make them less ideal for younger children.
While every child is different, I personally find myself gravitating toward locations where kids have room to move safely and parents can relax a little more.
The Main Stockyards Area on Weekends
While I love the cactus garden section of the Stockyards, the main Stockyards area can become extremely crowded.
Between tourists, events, livestock drives, and weekend traffic, it can feel overwhelming for some families.
If we're shooting at the Stockyards, I usually prefer the quieter sections rather than the busiest tourist areas.
Choosing the Right Location for Your Family
The truth is that the "best" family location isn't always the prettiest location.
The best family location is the one where your children can be themselves.
The location where they're comfortable.
The location where they can explore.
The location where they can laugh, play, and interact naturally.
Those are the moments that create genuine family photographs.
And those are the moments I love capturing.
If you're not sure which location is right for your family, don't worry—that's one of my favorite parts of the planning process. I'm always happy to help recommend a location that fits your family's personality, children's ages, and overall vision for your session.
