A Downtown Dallas Proposal | Michael & Taylor

One of the things I love most about proposal photography is that no two proposals are ever the same.
Some happen in crowded public spaces surrounded by family and friends. Others happen quietly, with only the couple sharing the moment together.
Michael and Taylor's proposal was one of those moments that felt intimate, romantic, and completely centered around the two of them.
Several weeks before the proposal, Michael reached out to me about photographing one of the biggest moments of their relationship. He had already chosen the location—a beautiful hotel in downtown Dallas with an outdoor patio overlooking the city skyline. Sitting several stories above the streets below, it offered incredible views of downtown and created the perfect setting for a proposal at sunset.
One of the first things I do when working with proposal clients is go over all the details ahead of time. We talk about timing, location, where the proposal will happen, and how we can make sure everything goes smoothly while still keeping the surprise intact.
Sometimes clients already have the perfect location picked out. Other times, they're looking for suggestions and guidance. If a location needs to be scouted beforehand, I'm always happy to visit ahead of time and help choose the exact spot where the proposal should happen. It's something I offer at no additional charge because I know how important these moments are.
For Michael and Taylor's proposal, the location was straightforward enough that scouting wasn't necessary. The patio was easy to find, and Michael already knew exactly where he wanted to ask the question.
On the day of the proposal, I arrived early, just like I do for every proposal I photograph.
I always plan to arrive at least 30 to 45 minutes before the scheduled proposal time. The last thing I ever want is to be stuck in traffic or rushing to get into position while someone is about to get engaged.
I'd much rather be early and waiting.
That evening, I found a seat at the indoor bar just inside the hotel. With a sweet tea in front of me and my cameras tucked away, I looked like any other guest enjoying the evening.
Meanwhile, Michael and I stayed in contact through text messages.
Before every proposal, I ask the person proposing what both of them will be wearing. It sounds like a small detail, but it makes a huge difference. Having a description allows me to identify the couple immediately and ensures I don't accidentally miss the moment while trying to figure out who I'm supposed to be photographing.
As I sat waiting, Michael kept me updated on their arrival time.
When they finally walked through the hotel, I immediately recognized them.
I watched them make their way toward the outdoor patio before quietly slipping outside myself, careful not to draw attention to what I was doing.
The sun was beginning to set over downtown Dallas as Michael and Taylor stepped onto the patio.
Their section had been reserved privately, creating a quiet space where they could enjoy the view together while the city stretched out behind them.
From my spot nearby, I watched the moment unfold through my camera.
Even after photographing multiple proposals, there is still something special about those few seconds before the question is asked.
The anticipation.
The nerves.
The excitement.
Knowing what's about to happen while one person has absolutely no idea.
It's one of my favorite parts of proposal photography.
Then, in a matter of seconds, the moment arrived.
Michael dropped to one knee.
And everything changed.
The emotions that follow a proposal are always my favorite to photograph because they're completely genuine.
There are no prompts.
No directions.
No posing.
Just two people experiencing one of the biggest moments of their lives together.
You can see the surprise, excitement, and happiness unfold naturally in front of the camera.
Those are the moments couples remember forever.
And those are the moments I love preserving.
After giving them a few moments to celebrate together, I finally approached and introduced myself.
One of my favorite parts of proposal photography is that the experience doesn't end when the question is asked.
Once the surprise is over and the excitement settles in, we transition into a short engagement session.
That way, couples leave with more than just photos of the proposal itself.
They leave with photographs from the very first moments of their engagement.
The smiles are effortless.
The excitement is still fresh.
And there's something incredibly special about documenting those first few minutes after such a life-changing moment.
By the time I packed up my cameras and headed home, Michael and Taylor were no longer simply enjoying an evening together in downtown Dallas.
They were celebrating the beginning of their next chapter.
It's moments like these that remind me why I love photographing proposals so much.
Every proposal is different.
Every story is unique.
But every single one begins with a question that changes everything.
