A Surprise Proposal at the Fort Worth Water Gardens | Nick & Brittany
Some proposals happen months after careful planning.
Others happen after years of waiting for the perfect moment.
For Nick, that moment came on a beautiful day at the Fort Worth Water Gardens, surrounded by family, friends, and one very surprised Brittany.
Several weeks before the proposal, Nick reached out to me about photographing one of the biggest moments of his life. Unlike some of my proposal clients who are still searching for the perfect location, Nick already knew exactly where he wanted to ask the question.
The Fort Worth Water Gardens had already been chosen.
Not only did he know the location, but he even knew which section of the Water Gardens he wanted to use for the proposal itself.
Once we finalized the details, I headed out to scout the location ahead of time. Whenever possible, I like to visit proposal locations beforehand so that I can get familiar with the area, evaluate the lighting, and make sure we have a solid plan in place. After scouting the Water Gardens, I sent Nick an exact pin of where I thought the proposal should happen so there would be no confusion on the day of the proposal.
Once the location was set, all that was left to do was wait for the big day.
The morning of the proposal, Nick and I were in contact through text messages.
This is something I do with every proposal I photograph. One of the most important things I ask for is a description or photo of what the couple will be wearing. It might sound like a small detail, but it can make a huge difference.
Locations like the Water Gardens can become surprisingly busy, especially on weekends. Between tourists, families, and people exploring downtown Fort Worth, there can be a lot of people moving through the area.
Thankfully, Nick sent me a photo of exactly what he was wearing, which meant I knew exactly who I was looking for when they arrived.
As luck would have it, the Water Gardens were unusually quiet that day.
Even better, the few people who were nearby became part of the story.
As the proposal time approached, a few visitors wandered into the area where Nick planned to propose. Knowing the moment was only minutes away, I explained what was about to happen and asked if they would mind stepping back for a few moments.
Without hesitation, they agreed.
Some even moved to the upper levels of the Water Gardens so they could watch from above.
There is something really special about proposals. Even complete strangers become invested in the moment.
Everyone loves a good love story.
While all of this was happening, Brittany had absolutely no idea.
Earlier that day, she had returned home from a business trip after being out of town for several days. She thought she and Nick were simply going on a date night together after spending time apart.
What she didn't know was that family and friends were already making their way to the Water Gardens.
What she didn't know was that Nick had been carrying a ring.
And what she definitely didn't know was that one of the biggest moments of her life was only a few minutes away.
Once Nick texted me that they had arrived, I moved into position.
To avoid drawing attention to myself, I did what I often do during proposals—I became a tourist.
Or at least I pretended to be one.
I spent my time near the proposal location acting like I was photographing the scenery around me. The trees, the water, and the architecture of the Water Gardens became my temporary subjects while I waited for the couple to arrive.
When I finally spotted them walking toward the location, I recognized them immediately from the photo Nick had sent earlier that day.
Everything was unfolding exactly according to plan.
Once they reached the location, Nick guided Brittany into position.
Because we had already planned everything ahead of time, he knew exactly where to stand.
Then, before getting down on one knee, he pulled a note from his back pocket.
As he began reading, Brittany listened.
What she thought was simply a heartfelt moment between the two of them quickly became something much bigger.
With every word he read, the anticipation grew.
And then, after finishing his note, Nick did what everyone had been waiting for.
He got down on one knee.
One of my favorite things about proposal photography is watching the exact moment everything changes.
One second, life is moving along exactly as expected.
The next, someone is being asked one of the most important questions they'll ever answer.
The emotions that follow are impossible to recreate.
The surprise.
The excitement.
The tears.
The laughter.
The realization of what is happening.
Every proposal is different, but those emotions are always my favorite part.
As if the proposal itself wasn't enough of a surprise, there was one more thing waiting for Brittany.
As soon as the proposal was over, cheers erupted from above.
Looking up, she realized family and friends had been watching the entire thing from the upper levels of the Water Gardens.
The same people who had helped keep the secret.
The same people who had been counting down the days until this moment.
The same people who were now celebrating right alongside them.
It was one of those moments that instantly transforms a proposal into a shared memory.
Not just for the couple, but for everyone who loves them.
After the excitement settled and the congratulations were shared, everyone made their way down to join the newly engaged couple.
There were hugs.
There were smiles.
There were probably a few happy tears.
And there was a whole lot of excitement.
For a little while, the Water Gardens stopped being a tourist destination and became the backdrop for a family celebration.
Once everyone had a chance to celebrate, we wrapped up the proposal portion of the evening the same way I do with all of my proposal clients.
We transitioned into a short engagement session.
One of the things I love about including engagement portraits immediately after a proposal is that the emotions are still fresh. The excitement hasn't faded. The smiles are completely genuine. Everything feels a little lighter because the nerves are gone and the secret is finally out.
By the end of the evening, Nick and Brittany weren't just leaving the Water Gardens after a date.
They were leaving as an engaged couple.
And thanks to a lot of planning, a little bit of secrecy, and the support of family and friends, it was a proposal they'll remember for the rest of their lives.
